• Listen on a cold start — a rattling sound that fades once the engine warms up, or one that stays, tells you something about where the leak is.
• Note where the sound comes from — at the front (near the engine) or the rear (near the silencer).
• Look under the car — is something hanging loose, do you see rust or black soot marks at a seam? That points to a leak.
