What exactly does the drive belt do?
The drive belt (also known as the poly-V belt, auxiliary belt or V-belt) drives the engine's ancillary equipment: the alternator, the air-conditioning compressor and the power steering, and on some cars the water pump as well. Without a sound drive belt, these components no longer work reliably.
What is the difference between the drive belt and the timing belt?
The drive belt sits on the outside of the engine and drives ancillary equipment (alternator, air conditioning, power steering). The timing belt sits inside and controls the valves; it is more critical and more expensive, because a snapped timing belt can cause serious engine damage. So they are two different belts. How do I recognise a worn drive belt?
The most familiar sign is a squealing or whistling noise, especially when the engine is cold or when you accelerate. Cracks or fraying in the belt also point to wear. If you hear such a noise, have the belt checked before it snaps.
Does the tensioner always have to be replaced too?
Not always, but sometimes. The tensioner or idler pulley keeps the belt under tension. If it is worn or making noise, it is best replaced together with the belt so you don't have to come back again soon afterwards. We check this and discuss it with you in advance.
