What makes your steering wheel shake when braking?

A vibration in the steering wheel that only appears while braking almost always comes from the brake system or the wheels. The most common causes:

Shaking mainly in the steering wheel usually points to the front brakes; feel it more in the pedal or the seat and it can be the rear brakes. A proper diagnosis makes the difference clear.

Why you shouldn't ignore it

Shaking when braking isn't 'just annoying' — it's a safety signal. What happens if you keep driving:

In short: the sooner you have it checked, the safer you drive and the cheaper the repair usually turns out.

Frequently asked questions about shaking when braking

Why does my steering wheel shake only when I brake?

Usually because of warped brake discs: the discs are no longer perfectly flat, so the caliper 'bumps' over the unevenness — which you feel as shaking in the steering wheel. Sometimes it's worn or unevenly worn pads. A free brake check at AutoJet quickly shows what it is.

Is it dangerous to keep driving with shaking brakes?

Yes, don't leave it. Warped discs and worn pads mean a longer braking distance and the problem only gets worse on its own. Come in time and you often save the discs and pay only for new pads. Wait too long and you replace both discs and pads — and it's a failure point at the APK (Dutch MOT).

What does replacing brakes cost at AutoJet in Almere?

Replacing brake pads costs from €160 per axle (including fitting). Discs together with pads from €330 per axle. Our hourly rate is €70. The brake check is free and the exact price for your car you see up front by license plate — you never pay for work you haven't approved.

Could it be the wheel balance rather than the brakes?

It could. Rule of thumb: if the wheel shakes only while braking, it points to the discs or pads. If it shakes at a constant speed without braking too, wheel imbalance or a rim/tyre problem is more likely. At the free brake check we work out which of the two it is.

Do I always have to replace both discs and pads?

Not always. If only the pads are worn and the discs are still good, we replace just the pads (from €160 per axle). If the discs are warped or too thin, discs and pads go together (from €330 per axle). After the free check we tell you honestly what's really needed.

How soon can I come in and how long does it take?

You book online by license plate and pick a moment Mon–Sat between 11:00 and 20:00. A brake check and common brake jobs are usually done quickly. You can also call or message +31 6 12070065 — we speak Ukrainian, Russian and English.
