What makes your steering wheel shake when braking?

A vibration in the steering wheel that only appears while braking almost always comes from the brake system or the wheels. The most common causes:

• Warped brake discs — by far number one. Through heat and wear the discs are no longer perfectly flat. The caliper then 'bumps' over the unevenness, which you feel as shaking in the steering wheel or brake pedal.
• Worn or unevenly worn brake pads — brake unevenly and cause vibration.
• Wheel imbalance — sometimes a vibration seems stronger when braking.
• Play in the suspension or steering components — worn ball joints or bearings can amplify a vibration.

Shaking mainly in the steering wheel usually points to the front brakes; feel it more in the pedal or the seat and it can be the rear brakes. A proper diagnosis makes the difference clear.

Why you shouldn't ignore it

Shaking when braking isn't 'just annoying' — it's a safety signal. What happens if you keep driving:

• Longer braking distance — warped discs and worn pads brake less effectively. In an emergency stop every metre counts.
• It gets worse, not better — a slight warp reinforces itself: more vibration, more heat, faster wear.
• More damage, bigger bill — replace pads in time and you often save the discs. Wait too long and you replace both discs and pads.
• APK risk — discs that are too thin or uneven are a failure point at the Dutch MOT.

In short: the sooner you have it checked, the safer you drive and the cheaper the repair usually turns out.

Does the wheel shake only when braking — or also without?

• The wheel shakes only when you brake → strongly points to warped brake discs or worn front pads.
• The wheel shakes at a constant speed without braking too → then wheel imbalance or a rim/tyre problem is more likely.
