What does a clutch actually do?
The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox. Press the clutch pedal and you disconnect the engine from the wheels — that's how you change gear and stand still with the engine running. Let the pedal back up and a spring presses the clutch plate against the flywheel, so the engine's power reaches the wheels.
That clutch plate has a friction lining that slowly wears down, just like brake pads. Lots of pulling away in town, towing a trailer or 'slipping' the pedal when setting off all speed up the wear. At some point the clutch can no longer transfer the power properly — and that's when you notice the first symptoms.
The symptoms of a worn clutch

- The clutch slips — your engine revs climb, but the car doesn't pull away with them. It's clearest under hard acceleration or uphill.
- High or heavy bite point — the clutch only 'bites' high up as you release the pedal, or the pedal feels heavy.
- Juddering or jerking when pulling away — the car sets off in a jerky rather than smooth way.
- Burning smell — a sharp, burnt odour after hard acceleration or crawling in traffic.
- Hard shifting — the gear won't slot in smoothly, or you hear a crunch.

A clutch never gets better on its own — the wear only continues. Keep driving with a slipping clutch and you risk two things. First, a worn clutch can damage other parts: the heat and slipping can take the flywheel or pressure plate with it, making the repair considerably more expensive.
Second, it's unsafe: if the clutch fails completely you come to a stop — sometimes at an awkward moment, in the middle of a junction or while merging. So have the symptoms checked in time; replacing it early is nearly always cheaper and safer than waiting for it to fail.
