Worn clutch? The symptoms at a glance

Not sure whether your clutch is worn out? The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox and wears down a little on every drive — for one car by 80,000 km, for another only after 200,000 km. This guide sets out the symptoms of a worn clutch at a glance, explains why you shouldn't put off a faulty clutch and what AutoJet in Almere does for you. We replace the clutch — including DSG and automatic — from €630 including fitting, with a 6-month warranty. You see the price up front by license plate. Open Mon–Sat 11:00–20:00.

What does a clutch actually do?

The clutch connects the engine to the gearbox. Press the clutch pedal and you disconnect the engine from the wheels — that's how you change gear and stand still with the engine running. Let the pedal back up and a spring presses the clutch plate against the flywheel, so the engine's power reaches the wheels.

That clutch plate has a friction lining that slowly wears down, just like brake pads. Lots of pulling away in town, towing a trailer or 'slipping' the pedal when setting off all speed up the wear. At some point the clutch can no longer transfer the power properly — and that's when you notice the first symptoms.

The symptoms of a worn clutch

Recognise one or more of these signs? Then there's a good chance your clutch needs replacing. Have it checked in time:

On an automatic or DSG wear shows differently: jerks when shifting, loss of power or a dashboard warning. We replace those too.

Why you shouldn't put off a worn clutch

A clutch never gets better on its own — the wear only continues. Keep driving with a slipping clutch and you risk two things. First, a worn clutch can damage other parts: the heat and slipping can take the flywheel or pressure plate with it, making the repair considerably more expensive.

Second, it's unsafe: if the clutch fails completely you come to a stop — sometimes at an awkward moment, in the middle of a junction or while merging. So have the symptoms checked in time; replacing it early is nearly always cheaper and safer than waiting for it to fail.

Frequently asked questions about a worn clutch

How do I recognise a slipping clutch?

With a slipping clutch your engine revs climb but the car doesn't pull away with them — clearest under hard acceleration or uphill. It often comes with a burning smell and a high bite point on the pedal. Recognise this? Have the clutch checked in time, before other parts get damaged.

Can I keep driving with a worn clutch?

Briefly, yes, but it's not wise. A worn clutch only gets worse and the heat can damage the flywheel or pressure plate — making the repair more expensive. On top of that you could come to a stop at an awkward moment. Replacing it in time is nearly always cheaper and safer.

What does a clutch replacement cost at AutoJet?

A clutch replacement at AutoJet starts from €630 including fitting, with a 6-month warranty — including for DSG and automatic. Because the work varies per car, we give the exact price up front by license plate. You never pay for work you haven't approved.

Do you also replace the clutch on a DSG or automatic?

Yes. Besides manual cars, we also replace the clutch on DSG and automatic gearboxes. The symptoms are then often jerks when shifting or a loss of power. Enter your license plate and you get a clear price up front.

How long does a clutch last?

It varies a lot by car and driving style: from around 80,000 km with lots of city traffic and pulling away to well over 200,000 km with calm driving. Many short trips, towing a trailer and slipping the pedal all speed up wear. Noticing symptoms? Have it checked.

Why does it smell of burning when pulling away?

A sharp, burnt smell after hard acceleration or in traffic often points to a slipping clutch: the friction lining overheats because it no longer transfers the power properly. That's a clear symptom of wear — have the clutch checked in time, before the damage grows.
