Checking coolant — when and why

Seeing a low coolant level or is your temperature gauge climbing? Then it's time to check your coolant. Coolant does more than just cool: it protects your engine against overheating, freezing and corrosion. A level that's too low, or old, worn-out coolant, can lead to overheating — and that's an expensive repair. This guide explains what coolant does, when to check and replace it, which warning signs you should take seriously and why you shouldn't ignore it. AutoJet in Almere checks your coolant for free at every service and replaces it to the manufacturer's spec — you see the price up front by license plate. Open Mon–Sat 11:00–20:00.

What does coolant actually do?

Coolant — also called antifreeze — is not plain water. It's a mixture that does three jobs at once: it cools your engine by carrying heat away, it protects against freezing in winter and boiling in summer, and it prevents corrosion in the cooling system and the engine.

That corrosion protection is what sets it apart from water: pure water would rust your radiator, water pump and engine block from the inside. The additives in coolant stop that — but those additives wear out over time. That's why coolant isn't something you 'pour in once and forget': both the level and the quality need to be kept up.

When to check and when to replace?

Check the level on a cold engine — never on a warm one, because the system is under pressure and you can scald yourself. Look whether the level in the expansion tank sits between the min and max marks. Does the level keep dropping after you top up? Then coolant is leaking somewhere and you should have it checked.

Warning signs you should take seriously

Coolant usually lets you know before things really go wrong. Recognise one of these signs? Have your car checked:

Why you shouldn't ignore this

A shortage of coolant, or worn-out coolant, leads to overheating, and overheating is one of the most expensive things that can happen to your engine. An engine that runs too hot can warp the cylinder head or blow the head gasket — and that's a big, expensive repair, sometimes engine damage.

The tricky part is that it can happen quickly: once the temperature gauge is in the red, the damage is already adding up. So don't keep driving with a warning on your dashboard. Checking, topping up and replacing to spec in time costs a fraction of what an overheated engine costs — and keeps you from being stranded by the roadside.

Frequently asked questions about checking coolant

How do I check my coolant myself?

Always check the level on a cold engine: look whether the level in the expansion tank sits between the min and max marks. Never open the cap on a warm engine — the system is under pressure. Unsure about the quality, or does the level keep dropping? Have it checked for free at AutoJet in Almere.

Can I just add water if the level is low?

Better not. Water dilutes the antifreeze and corrosion protection, so your cooling system can freeze in winter and rust from the inside. In an emergency, a little water to get home is fine, but have the right coolant topped up afterwards. We top up with the fluid to the manufacturer's spec for your car.

How often should coolant be replaced?

That's done to the manufacturer's spec and varies by make and type of coolant — for many cars it's around every few years or ~60,000–100,000 km. Enter your license plate and we'll look up the right interval for your car, and you'll see the price up front.

What does a coolant check cost at AutoJet?

The coolant check and top-up are included in a service — a small service costs €170 and a large service €320. A separate replacement is priced by license plate, so you see the price up front. You never pay for work you haven't approved.

My temperature gauge is climbing — can I keep driving?

No, don't keep driving with a climbing temperature gauge or a coolant warning. Overheating can quickly damage the cylinder head or head gasket — an expensive repair. Pull over safely, let the engine cool down and have it checked. Feel free to call us: +31 6 12070065.

Can you find a leak in the cooling system?

Yes. If your coolant level keeps dropping, we run a pressure test on the cooling system to find where it's leaking — for example at a hose, the radiator or the water pump. We tell you honestly what's going on and give the price up front by license plate.
