Timing belt replacement — when and why?

The timing belt (distributieriem) is one of the most important parts of your engine — and also one you never see or hear. If it snaps, severe engine damage almost always follows. This guide explains what the belt actually does, why it's so critical, when to replace it according to manufacturer spec (by mileage or by age) and why you often replace the water pump at the same time. AutoJet in Almere replaces the timing belt to spec — you see the price up front by license plate. Open Mon–Sat 11:00–20:00.

What does the timing belt do?

The timing belt synchronises the camshaft and the crankshaft, so the valves open and close at exactly the right moment relative to the pistons. That timing is extremely precise: everything in your engine literally revolves around this belt.

On many engines the same belt also drives the water pump, which sits behind the timing cover. The belt runs continuously as long as the engine is on and therefore wears slowly but surely — even when you notice nothing.

Why is it so critical?

If the timing belt snaps while driving, the camshaft and crankshaft lose their synchronisation. On most modern engines (so-called interference engines) the pistons then strike the valves. The result is severe engine damage: bent valves, damaged pistons, sometimes an unrepairable engine — often a total loss of the engine.

Such a repair quickly runs into thousands of euros, whereas replacing the belt on time is a planned and far cheaper maintenance point. That's why this is not a part to save on or put off.

When should you replace it?

Every manufacturer prescribes its own replacement interval. That interval almost always has two limits: a number of kilometres and a number of years — and you follow whichever limit is reached first.

So there is no fixed figure that applies to every car. Want to know the exact interval for your car? Enter your license plate and we see the make, model and engine and look up the spec.

Signs and the risk of postponing

The catch is that a timing belt usually snaps without warning. Still, there are signs that call for attention:

In doubt: don't gamble. The cost of postponing — a wrecked engine — is out of all proportion to a planned replacement. Not sure if it's been done? Have it checked with us by license plate.

How AutoJet does it: water pump included and a fixed price

At AutoJet in Almere we replace the timing belt to manufacturer spec. Our advice is to replace the water pump at the same time: on many engines it sits behind the timing cover and is driven by the same belt. If the pump fails later, the same labour has to be done again — so it almost always pays to do it in one go.

You see the price up front by license plate: timing belt replacement from €585 (including fitting). You get a 6-month warranty and never pay for work you haven't approved in advance. We speak Ukrainian, Russian and English. If the engine is complex, we give the exact price by license plate or after inspection.

Frequently asked questions about the timing belt

What happens if the timing belt breaks?

On most modern engines the pistons then strike the valves, resulting in severe engine damage: bent valves, damaged pistons and often a total loss of the engine. Such a repair quickly costs thousands of euros, whereas replacing it on time is a planned and far cheaper maintenance point.

When should I replace the timing belt?

According to manufacturer spec. That almost always has two limits — a number of kilometres and a number of years — and you follow whichever is reached first. If you drive little, age is often reached first, because rubber ages even without mileage. Enter your license plate and we look up the exact interval for your car.

Does the water pump really need to be done at the same time?

We strongly advise it. On many engines the water pump sits behind the timing cover and is driven by the same belt. If it fails later, the same labour has to be done again. Doing it at the same time almost always saves you a second, expensive job.

What does timing belt replacement cost?

Timing belt replacement at AutoJet is from €585, including fitting. Because it differs per engine, you see the price up front by license plate. For complex engines we give the exact price by license plate or after inspection. You never pay for work you haven't approved.

How do I know the interval for my car?

There is no fixed figure that applies to every car — each make, model and engine has its own spec. Enter your license plate and we see your car's details and look up the exact replacement interval (both mileage and years) for you.

Do you give a warranty on the work?

Yes. Timing belt replacement comes with a 6-month warranty. We replace to manufacturer spec, you see the price up front by license plate and you never pay for work you haven't approved in advance.
