Knocking or clunking noises from the suspension? How to find the cause
Do you hear a knock or a clunk under the car when you drive over a bump or a rough road? That's almost always a worn part in the suspension — a stabiliser link, a bush, a ball joint or a wheel bearing. The noise is annoying, but above all it's a signal: worn suspension affects your steering, stability and tyre wear and can cost you the APK. This guide explains why the suspension makes noise, which noise points to which part and why you shouldn't ignore it. AutoJet in Almere checks your undercarriage for free and pinpoints the noise exactly on the lift — you see the price up front by license plate. Open Mon–Sat 11:00–20:00.
Why does your suspension make noise?
Your suspension absorbs every imperfection in the road. To do that, there are dozens of moving parts under your car: stabiliser links (anti-roll bar links), bushes, control arms, ball joints, springs, shock absorbers and wheel bearings. All of these wear with the miles — rubbers crack, ball joints develop play, bearings start to run.
As soon as play develops somewhere, the part moves a little on every bump where it shouldn't. That's what you hear as a knock, clunk or rattle. So the noise doesn't come 'out of nowhere' — it's a worn part asking for attention. The skill is working out which part it is, and we do that on the lift.
Which noise points to which part?
The type of noise and the moment you hear it often already point in a direction. A few common causes:
- Knocking or clunking over bumps — usually a worn stabiliser link (anti-roll bar link) or a worn bush in the suspension.
- A dull clunk when turning in or over bumps in a bend — often a worn ball joint or a drive component.
- A humming noise that rises with speed — points to a worn wheel bearing.
- Rattling — can indicate a worn shock absorber or spring.
Note: these are pointers, not a diagnosis. Different parts can sound alike. That's why we put the car on the lift and pinpoint the noise concretely before we replace anything.
Why you shouldn't ignore the noise
A little tick over a bump feels harmless, but the suspension is a safety system. A worn stabiliser link or ball joint affects your steering and stability — the car responds less predictably, especially when swerving or in a bend. And a bearing or bush that's gone lets your tyres wear unevenly, which again costs money and grip.
On top of that, worn suspension can cost you the APK (Dutch MOT): play in ball joints, broken bushes or a leaking shock absorber cause a failure. What starts as a small noise also puts extra strain on other parts and so becomes a more expensive repair. Having it checked in time is therefore both safer and cheaper.

Frequently asked questions about suspension noises
What is that knock or clunk when I drive over a bump?
Knocking or clunking over bumps usually comes from a worn stabiliser link (anti-roll bar link) or a worn bush in the suspension. There can also be play in a ball joint. We pinpoint exactly which part it is for you on the lift — the check is free.
I hear a humming noise that gets louder at higher speed. What is that?
A humming or droning noise that rises with speed often points to a worn wheel bearing. We don't let that run on: a bearing that wears further can eventually seize. Come by for a free check and we'll determine whether the bearing needs replacing (from €199).
Is it dangerous to keep driving with a knocking suspension?
A worn stabiliser link or ball joint affects your steering and stability, and a worn bearing can seize. So it's not a harmless little noise. Have it checked in time — that's safer and stops other parts wearing further and the repair getting more expensive.
Can worn suspension cause an APK failure?
Yes. Play in ball joints, broken bushes or a leaking shock absorber can cause an APK (Dutch MOT) failure, because they affect your stability and safety. So it's best to have the noise checked before the inspection — that avoids a failure and a re-inspection.
What does fixing a suspension noise cost at AutoJet?
It depends on the part. Replacing a stabiliser link can be from €140, a wheel bearing from €199 and shock absorbers (per pair) from €360. Labour is €70 per hour. The undercarriage check is free and you see the exact price up front by license plate. You never pay for work you haven't approved.
Can you really find the noise before replacing anything?
Yes. We put the car on the lift, check every suspect part for play and pinpoint the noise concretely before we replace anything. That way you only replace what's genuinely worn and don't pay for parts that are still good. The check is free and with no obligation.
